Also, if you do want to try the maze, because maybe there is more to it, there is an additional skull in a skeleton on the back corner of the castle you can get to before going into the maze. Low and behold I didn't need any skulls to get inside the castle. So I went in the first area, got the skull then left and looped around back (using telport to bring both characters) and climbed the vines.
